That being said, I am so thankful I am Canadian!
The Canada Pension cheque is now (or
soon will be) referred to as a "Federal Benefit Payment?"
I'll be part of the one percent to
forward this. I am forwarding it because it touches a nerve in me, and I hope
it will in you. Please keep passing it on until everyone in our country has
read it.
The government is now referring to our
Canada Pension checks as a "Federal Benefit Payment." This isn't a benefit. It is our money paid out of our
earned income! Not only did we all contribute to our pension but our employers
did too. It totaled 15% of our income before taxes.
If you averaged $30K per year over your working
Upon retirement, if you took out only 3%
per year, you'd receive $39,318 per year, or $3,277 per month. That's almost
three times more than today's average Old Age Pension benefit of $1,230 per
month. And your retirement fund would last more than 33 years (until you're 98
if you retire at age 65)!
I can only imagine how much better most
average-income people could live in retirement if our government had just
invested our money in low-risk interest-earning accounts.
They didn't have a referendum to ask us
if we wanted to lend the money to them. And they didn't pay interest on the
debt they assumed. And recently they've told us that the money won't support us
for very much longer.
But is it our fault they misused our
investments? And now, to add insult to injury, they're calling it a "benefit", as if we never worked to earn every penny of
it. Just because they borrowed the money does not mean that our investments
were a charity!
Let's take a stand. We have earned our
right to our pensions. Demand that our MP's bring some sense into our
government.
Find a way to keep Canada Pension going
for the sake of that 92% of our population who need it.
Then call it what it is: Our Earned
Retirement Income.

ReplyDelete1) CPP (employee and employer combined) isn't 15% - the last year I had to do payroll (2015) it was running at just under 9% combined. Prior to 'CPP reform' in the early 2000's the rate was lower - 8.5% in 2002, and it had ramped-up (by 1%/Yr?) from just under 6% in 1999.
2) So you didn't contribute $375/Month - more like $250/month - and that's only over the last dozen or dozen and a half years
3) Returns of 1% per month, compounded monthly are hardly 'meagre' - from 1956 to 1998 (just the figures I happen to have handy) the TSE 300 total return index yielded an average of 0.776% monthly.
4) If you did get 1%/month on $375 monthly investment, you would end up not with $1.3M as stated, but $4.4M over a 40 year working life
5) A final value of $1.3M would represent a compounded monthly return of 0.66% on $375/month, which is more in-line with the available market returns. Except that you didn't contribute $375/month, you actually contributed more like $225 - and that only for the last 15 years. For the first 20 years you contributed more like $150/month.
